Tonya Peterson
Hi, I’m Tonya. As a counseling intern, I am concentrating on both child- and adult-focused interventions. In my work with adult clients, I emphasize mindfulness and cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) strategies to help individuals become aware of thinking patterns. This approach allows clients to view challenging situations more clearly, enabling them to respond in a way that feels both effective and empowering. I place a strong focus on play therapy to support children and families as they navigate life's challenges, as well. My dedication to helping children manage emotional struggles and assisting parents in building healthy family dynamics is what drives my work each day. My journey into counseling was inspired by a desire to create a positive and lasting impact in the lives of others.
After earning a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education from the University of Wyoming, I worked with Sweetwater School District Number One for 22 years as a Special Education Teacher, where I developed a strong foundation in child development and advocated for programs to support student needs. Currently, I am furthering my expertise by pursuing a master’s degree in counseling at the University of Wyoming/Casper, alongside my role as a school counselor. My approach centers on empathy, active listening, and collaboration to create tailored interventions that meet the needs of children, adults, and families alike. In my free time, I enjoy traveling internationally and spending time with my two grown children.
